US 6 CLEAR CREEK ROCKSLIDE
Clear
Creek Canyon, Colorado
A rockslide comprising some
1,500 cubic yards of rock material swept across two-lane US 6 in
Clear Creek Canyon , Colorado . The slide partially inundated two
gravel haul trucks and a passenger car. The debris completely covered
the roadway some 15-ft high. No one was injured in the incident.
Lyman Henn provided emergency
field engineering and construction oversight during repair of this
major rock slope failure. Services included geotechnical and rock
slope engineering to the emergency repair team. Lyman Henn determined
the mode and probable cause of the failure and assisted in determining
stabilization measures for the remaining slope. Stabilization included
40,000 cubic yards of rock excavation, scaling, rock bolting, placing
60,000 square feet of wire mesh rock fall protection and 1,000 tons
of asphalt. Lyman Henn worked closely with CDOT to evaluate design
options with regard to constructability, long-term stability and
maintenance and cost/schedule impacts on the emergency construction.
Lyman Henn provided full-time
field engineering support during emergency construction. Tasks included
consultation on rock blast designs, recommendations for scaling
and rock bolting of cut faces, construction observation and field
testing oversight of rock bolts.
